This umbrella term encompasses the direct exchange of goods for goods (or barter) where no cash changes hands to more complex variations; counterpurchase, which involves a traditional export transaction plus the commitment of the exporter to buy additional goods or services from that country; and buy-back, in which the supplier of plant or equipment is paid from the future proceeds resulting from the use of the plant.
